I have just gotten home from one of the most homophobic and disrespetful experiences I have had in my life, which was at the Aveda Institute salon. I was seen by a student named Remy. My experience with her was completely unsatisfactory to say the least. She said nothing to me almost the entire time she worked with me. She walked away from me without saying a word twice and left me sitting in the chair wondering where she had gone. The haircut I recieved was not what I had described at all and when I asked her to adjust some things she walked away and got her teacher. The woman, whose name I can't recall, treated me equally as disregarding. She cut my hair extremely short while speaking to me in a disrespectful and mocking tone. I was offered none of the services that are provided with a haircut, in fact they were never even mentioned to me. I walked away from that experience almost in tears and quite frankly shocked at how completely homophobic that situation was. I am a genderqueer i

I walked away from that experience almost in tears and quite frankly shocked at how completely homophobic that situation was. I am a genderqueer individual. I am a female with a masculine appearance. I asked for a man's haircut and I was treated like a piece of garbage. I am so disappointed in the service and treatment I recieved. I went into Aveda with respect for the care they provide and I now have none. I would recommend this salon to no one and would encourage all lgbtq individuals boycott this establishment

I've been here a couple of times now and I will keep going back. Quality does change with each student, especially dependent on how long they've been training, but I've always had an above par experience with each dresser. I'm male and only go in for cuts; they always get it right and I've even let them experiement a bit (one dresser asked if she could go a bit "funky" with the cut) and I liked what she did so much that it's my normal request now. Always polite, always friendly, those students have the best attitudes. NOTE: The students do not get money for the cuts! They only make tips, the actual charge for the cut goes to the institute. Because of this, my tip always equals the amount of they charge for the cut because it just doesn't seem fair to me that they aren't earning that money for the work.

Extremely positive experience in every respect! My daughter treated me to my FIRST facial on my 50th birthday. What a lovely surprise for a mother/daughter day out! The girls were very efficient and comforting. Afterward, I felt as tho I had received a face lift! :)......the foot soak was such a soothing touch. Thank you AVEDA.....(I'm almost 51---time to return!!)

My lady friend really enjoyed it from beginning to end however i had to pay for it so lower your prices please

I couldn't believe the cost. I showed up with a $150.00 gift certificate, and ended up owing $90!!!!\r \r Maybe I just don't appreciate a high priced salon, but I feel my money could've been spent better elsewhere.

I have gone several times and each time have been very satisfied with the foils I have had. I am pretty fussy and I like three colors. Never a problem. As they are students they are a little slow. So bring a book.

I had my hair cut here by Kaitlin and she did a superb job. I actually preferred the cut she gave me, over the way my regular stylist cuts my hair. Kaitlin was very professional, friendly, and did a fabulous job cutting and styling my hair. Thanks Kaitlin... I will be back for sure!!

I've never had a bad experience here and it's a great bargain considering the service. The best haircuts I've had over the last ten years has been here and I've always been treated as if I was their best customer. It's also a great way to test out the Aveda line of products. I've gone in just for a haircut, and ended up having mini-massages, make-up applied and so on just so the students can get more practice in. That makes for a enjoyable time and I always leave feeling like I did something special for myself.

The first time I was here for a hair cut n color the supervisor took a look at my hair n literally started screaming at me that theres no way the color will take...Jeez relax lady !!1 She continued with erh loud n extremely rude "opinion"....that the poor girl who was working on my hair kept apologizing after she left. I went back after many months to gv it a 2nd chance and this time the trainee was awful...after almost 3 hrs she colored my hair unevenly n when the supervisor told her to redo it..sh erefused and said I was done!!1 NEVER COMING BACK...its well worth your time and money to go someplace else where u get quality for ur money.

I had a 9:00 a.m. appointment with Ginger on Thursday and I was her model for her very first hair cut. My hair hadnt been cut in about three years and it truely was a mess! She cut my hair into a "Bob" and I must say," I love it!!!!" Ginger did a very professional job and I am looking forward to her graduating and being my stylest . GREAT JOB GINGER! I went in yesterday for a cut and color at GM Aveda Institute. I had a GREAT experience. My hair was placed in the capable hands of a stylist called Tuesday, and she did wonderful. She was knowledgable, and very helpful when figuring out what exact shade to color my hair. She convinced me (and rightfully so!) to foil in some very subtle highlights to the overall dark chestnut color. This was a great suggestion. The end color is rich, natural, and perfect! She did an excellent job on the cut as well. She knew exactly what I was going for. Also - I will say, she made me feel very comfortable about my hair lifestyle. i.e - I rarely blowdry, flat iron, or use any product in my hair. Whenever I tell stylists this, it is usually followed by a speech about why I should, or at least patronizing looks, as if I were a child. Not so with Tuesday. She complented my hair, and seemed very much onbaord with my no-frills lifestyle. This was a refreshing change!!! Thanks Tuesday. I'll be back again.

I live on the Eastside and wanted to save some money on getting my hair done. I tryed Gary Manuel Aveda Institute and what a great decision that was! I spent $52 for a full foil (even with toner). So great, the student I had was very nice, even the students next to me were striking up convos. So awesome. I will deff. be back for another service soon. As long as your patient and understand that you ARE WITH A TRAINING STUDENT, then you'll love it here. Parking is a pain but hey it's Seattle. They should have a lot for their students and guests or something. Thanks again Gary Manuel Aveda Institute! I'll be back! :)

Major Points: --Addison is amazing with both cuts AND color MAKE AN APPOINTMENT WITH HER ASAP! --The G.M. Aveda Institute bends over backwards to make sure their clients leave happy with the end result. They check with their clients every step of the way. This ensures that you are happy with your hair AND that you enjoy the entire experience. --They use all Aveda products. Full Story (sorry it's so long, but it was such a good experience!) I am a student at a nearby university and I discovered the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute last December when I cut 12+ inches off of my hair (which I LOVED!) However, out of convenience (and mom paying!) I had my stylist at home cut my hair when I went home for spring break. Anyway, I decided it was way past time to get another haircut and remembering my first experience at Aveda, I made an appointment with whoever was available (I actually got in the same day I called). I arrived, was offered tea or water and was introduced to Addison, the stylist assigned to me. Then, I went on back for my haircut. For those of you who have never been to the Aveda Institute before, they include a scalp/neck massage with every haircut. So relaxing! This alone is worth the $16 I paid for my entire haircut! I came in with almost shoulder length hair and just wanted a short classic bob. Addison knew exactly what I was talking about and after the required consultation with an instructor, went to work. The end result was AMAZING. I love it! My hair turned out great. I can literally blowdry it and go...and still maintain a finished, styled look. So I had this amazing haircut, but it wasn't shown off to its full potential because I had about 2.5 inches of color grow out!!! So I immediately booked a color appointment with Addison for the following week. I had never had my hair colored at Aveda before but since Addison did such an amazing job on my cut, I wasn't even nervous when I came in today for the color. Plus, she approached my color very professionally and thoroughly. She was careful to ask what I wanted my color to look like, which tones I preferred, etc. Again, her decisions were checked by an instructor before she even started (they were right, by the way). Also, I have heard some people complain that Aveda takes forever. However, I came in today at 3 and was done before 6. That's pretty good especially considering that she touched up my bangs and styled my hair afterward AND has to consult with instructors throughout the process. (Sidenote: I had brought homework to do but had so much fun chatting with Addison that I didn't even do it the entire 3 hours!) The end result? AMAZING color. Exactly what I wanted. I mean...PERFECT. It is natural yet noticeable--a light, bright, shiny blonde that is the complete opposite of brassy or over processed hair. I can't stop admiring it! I didn't even know my color could look this good. Even the other students and instructors a

I've been coming here for about 2 years for facials and haircuts. I've received some great service for really cheap. Def come here, ask for a senior student, and you'll get great service!

All I wanted when walking in was a trim. The staff had overbooked me on a previous trip so I was told that this haircut would be complimentary. When I walked in, the service was great. Everyone was friendly and nice and I was taken to my station. My hairstylist, who was introduced to me as a advanced student asked me what I wanted. I asked for a trim. He gave me a "hm...are you sure?" sort of look and then asked me to elaborate. I said, a trim. 2 minutes later, my hair is 6 inches shorter and asymmetrical! I was in complete shock! My hairstylist styled my hair, the instructor checked it. They asked me if I liked it and I must have said yes because I gave him a really nice tip, picked up my bags and left. That night, I looked at my hair for the first time since leaving the salon and I burst out crying. I hated it! Everything about it was...off. So I picked up the phone, knowing full well that they were closed, and left a message at the salon, telling them that I got my hair cut, and that I hated it and that I would like them to fix it. I didn't hear back for 3 months, and 2 days ago I got a phone call from the salon asking if me if I called and offering another haircut to fix my hair. No thank you sir.

I usually go to Gene Juarez training salon but thought I'd give this place a try. The experience itself was fine. But the hairdresser was poorly trained and had no idea what chunky bangs were or facial framing. Although I don't know much about hair styling I do know those terms from going to hair dressers for over thirty years. I left with two different hair cuts. The layering wasn't even blended in. I was very disappointed and had to get another cut to fix the mistakes by this poor student.

I've had six visits there over the last eight months - and most of the time it's been a good experience. The cut's always fantastic. I have my hair colored dark auburn, and three times it's been a great experience - while three times it's been not-so-great. Elle was able to recover the color to a normal state after a student left me with extremely "hot orange" roots - but two visits later there was a another uneven coloring experience - and although Elle had taken great care of fixing the first oopsie - the second oopsie she wasn't quite so accommodating and had to be persuaded to fix it properly. It is a good value for the services, so if you're patient, you'll eventually walk out with a great look.

Im a current student of the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute and I have to say this school is one of a kind. The educators are amazing, and they know what theyre talking about! Our "learning Leaders" are required to attend education courses often so they can keep up with the trends and pass it on. I really learn something new with every client. When you enter the school you dont get that stuffy beauty school feeling. Its very bright and hip, im happy to come to such an inviting place. Which is saying alot because I have hated going to school since i can remember.

I had heard of the Instutute through a friend. I was on a budget and needed a less expensive alternative, so I made the appt. I was introduced to Laura, my stylist/student. We went over what color and look I wanted, and the Sr Instructor Elle came over to consult and advise. I had the 2 process color, Laura did a phenomenal job with the foils (a challenge since my hair is short), very professional and warm and fun. The color, the highlights & style turned out beautifully. I highly recomment laura, her professional and courteous service is to be commended...she has a great future ahead of her. I will be asking for her again! And what a bargain...here I paid at least half of what it cost me elsewhere, and left looking & feeling Fab..

Over the past few months of my sporadic 2+ years of going to the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute, the front desk team & quality of services performed are finally worth MORE than their cheap prices. It seems like the newer staff at the desk is a...

Waxing has always been avoided due to fear of pain, but I was introduced to underarm and leg waxing that was basically pain free due to the spa student Marley's magic touch. She explained what was going to happen and quick to sooth before the pain could set in when she pulled the strips. I am now a convert thanks to her. I am so happy to have found her early in her career because I believe she will be hard to get appointments with after the word gets out - but I feel it only right to share good things when found and I think Marley is a GOOD FIND. I've also had her 90 minute facial which was like heavenly relaxation. It sure seems that this school has found natural talent and is teaching the technical aspects needed to have a real career. This one is worth following after she graduates from the school.

I got a beautiful new color for the fall. A lovely red from Elizabeth. She then went the EXTRA mile and gave me a hand massage, and the very best blow-out of my life. I have naturally really curly hair and have been to really professional salons in California and no one could straiten it like the students here did. GREAT!!!! Took 3 hours, but it was worth it!

I've been going here for years (and even worked here briefly a few years ago) and I've had some very good experiences here. Let me say at the outset that I never go here for cuts - only color, and only with more advanced students. That being said, it's an affordable way to get beautiful color, whether it's foiling, single process or bleach and tone. I have seen at least 15 different students over the years (and maybe more!) and have had great experiences with all but one of them. The students I've seen have been by and large extremely competent, knowledgeable, meticulous, and professional. I've gone to one other Aveda Institute once (in Atlanta) and was not so lucky! The unprofessional demeanor and incompetence of both the students and instructors there made me feel lucky to have such a great school accessible to me in Seattle. Gary leads the GMAI with a deft hand, and his commitment to excellence shows! The instructors at the Institute are excellent as well. It's a beautiful thing to be able to experience the same quality of service at this school as at the Gary Manuel Salon. Of course, these ARE students so they are far less experienced than professional hair stylists, which is why I would never get my hair cut here. But I have loads of layers in my hair and am super picky. If you want a simple cut or trim, you'll be in good hands. The facials are wonderful too!

Love this place!!!! I've been going to this institute for over a year now. I've had several students cut my hair and I've never been disappointed. The price is soooo within my budget. I pay about $20 plus tip for a regular hair cut (includes a scalp massage, they wash your hair, cut and style with Aveda products). What more could a woman ask for...great service, great hair products, great atmosphere for a very reasonable price.

I have to tell you, as much as I look to Citysearch for recommendations, I've never written a review - not once. After seeing Lovie at the Aveda Institute, and getting a self renewal facial, I feel compelled!! She is fantastic! I've been to a lot of facialists - and I mean A LOT - for my troubled skin and she is by far the most thorough. I don't need all the fancy shmancy stuff (although it was very relaxing and she gave me the best foot massage I've ever had), I just want my skin to be clean and unclogged . In the past, I've always left places feeling like the facialist had missed critical areas - not this time. She was so thorough, honest and NICE. I really feel like I've made a new best friend and I'm on the pathway to flawless skin. I am not ashamed to admit it: I AM ADDICTED TO LOVIE's FACIALS I WILL BE FOLLOWING HER WHERE EVER SHE GOES AFTER HER GRADUATION FROM THE AVEDA SCHOOL.

I've been to the school before, but it has been a while. I didn't know who was who anymore so I read the city search reviews and booked a foil and haircut with Megan. What a great experience. Best hand massage I've ever had for sure. My hair looks fantastic. Exactly what I asked for. I just loved her. Totally sweet and a great conversationalist. I've already booked my next appointment. Only one more foil and then she graduates though. Sad. :( Get in while you can.

My husband researched into where to find the Aveda products after a brief Vacation in Canada. (The Motel we stayed at there used Aveda products and I fell in love with them. ) He came across The Gary Manuel

I went in for a facial and walked out relaxed and ready to take over the world. Ok, maybe not that dramatic, but my experience was wonderful. They took great care to match the oils, cleanser, toner and moisturizers to my specific skin type. The downstairs facial rooms were serene and pleasant. This Aveda salon is not like your typical spa experience where you change into a robe and have a large room to yourself, but they do give you a small private area surrounded by chic, beige curtains. The lights are dimmed, soothing music pours from the ceiling and everyone speaks in a hush. No cell phones are ringing and it?s surprisingly calm given the ruckus going on upstairs in the hair salon. You cannot beat the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute prices, service or level of professionalism. Thank you!

I went to this school after a friend told me to check it out. I asked for an experienced student that could help turn my shoulder length hair into a modern cut. They gave me a person named Megan. I must admit I have never colored my hair. But Megan thought a cut and some subtle highlights would look nice. I went with it, and I was very impressed with the results. I look and feel 5 year younger!! And not only did I leave looking good, but incredibly relaxed. She gave me a shampoo and a hand massage, which is included in the haircut price. Damn, I wish my friend told me to go here before. Megan also seemed to be more mature then some of the younger students in the school, so if you want a student that knows their trade and can also give you some good conversation, I'd recommend Megan. Megan told me she is moving to CA in August, so get in and see her while she's still there. WTF? I meet a good stylist and she is going to leave me? Women! ;-) So if you don't get Megan or if you go after August, just make SURE you ask for an experienced student, as I have heard horror story haircuts happen at this school too. Oh and one last thing, bring cash... I tried to tip Megan on my credit card and the lady at the front said I couldn't put the tip on my credit card... WTF? I was forced to give her just the spare $5 I had with me, and I felt like a cheap shmuck.

I went in for a damage remedy with Dakota a few months ago. She was amazing! I had the most relaxing experience, and my damaged hair felt incredibily soft afterwards. She really took the time to pamper me and listen to my needs. I made a follow-up appointment for a color with Dakota, and was impressed yet again. Its amazing that students can do such a great job. She got me to the exact color I wanted. Request Dakota before she graduates!

I just went from long hair to short, and I love it. Best haircut I've recieved and it was only $16. I highly recommend Devi, she was very confident and a perfectionist. She communicated with me very well to make sure I was going to get a hair cut that worked with my lifestyle and my look. I came in not knowing exactly what I wanted and she was great at telling me what would work with my type of hair and shape of face and what wouldn't be as flattering. Devi is a very talented hair designer and I would recommend her to anyone. Be prepared, the $16 haircut takes 2 hours....but that includes massage, hairwash, makeup etc.

I just had the most amazing hair cut from Andee. She is a sweet girls and loves to talk which is great because it made me feel like she really cared. Go see her, she is really good. Im going to tell all my friends to go there, I was that happy. Plus the tea is great and the teachers are really nice. Also while your in that area go check out Square room..such a cute store.

I just moved to Seattle and had no idea where to get my hair done, so I looked on City search and was happy to find myself another Aveda school. I am a former stylist and went to an Aveda school myself, so I always like to give other students a chance. I called ahead and they booked me with the "cheapest" cut because the student was in the first phase of hair cutting. I ended up with Megan and could not have been more thrilled. She was extremely professional, completely thorough, and attentive throughout. Her "stress relieving scalp massage" was amazing, and you can tell that she is totally focused and happy to be doing it. This was important to me, because I know that when they stylist isn't into it, the massage is terrible. She also educated me about Aveda products without trying to sell me things I didn?t need. Megan turned my one-length hair that desperatly needed a kick, into beautiful layered hair, and I have never seen my hair look so good and have so much volume. I can't even do it like that and I was trained how! The entire process took only two hours for the massage, shampoo and cut, and only cost $14. Enough left over for a great tip and still a bargain! I think you pay more than that at Great Clips and it doesn't even begin to compare. I have another appointment with Megan in two weeks, and I intend to stick with her until she graduates in July. I think her cuts will be a little more now. Their prices go up a little as they get more experience, but it's never more than $20. In fact, now that she is doing color, and she showed me her portfolio, I will be in for some highlights soon! Bonus- Since the salon can't take kids, she recommended a great kids' salon she knows of on Mercer Island. I am recommending her to everyone I meet who wants an amazing service at an un-beatable price.

From a former guest to a GMAI Alumni, I've been shown nothing but perfection. My hair has never looked better and I had the pleasure to attend the best institute for cosmetology/esthetics around not only in Washington, but in neighboring states. If your a guest, you are taken care of by your stylist that is trained in one of the best educations in this profession, Aveda, but the best instructors in the business that check all guests for the highest quality experience on the market. As a student you are in for an exciting education that helps you to get ready for real salon life. The cuts are technical and precise. The hair color is vibrant and is more complex then other color lines on the market. Aveda's hair color you can customize the tone and brightness of the hair itself. Once you know Aveda's education, all other color and cutting education isn't as complex. The cosmetology and esthetics education at GMAI allows you to have a head start in this industry and become an accomplished professional with endless possibilities. Besides the advanced education, this school has further training at the Gary Manuel Salon with training salon Phase 3. This training expects perfection that teaches you to be a world class stylist and work for one of the best salons in Seattle, Gary Manuel Salon.

As a recent graduate from GMAI, I have to say that it was a rollercoaster of an education. I graduated from the esthetics department and feel that my education was pretty average. Now, I've never studied esthetics anywhere else, so I could be wrong at how great the education really is. Be forewarned that this is an AVEDA Institute, and with that comes the confines of only studying AVEDA's practices and philosophy (not that it is a bad one, at all.) Just know that you will REALLY have to work hard to be exposed to other (read: non-AVEDA) techniques, services, etc. I will say this, though, Teal and Michka are amazing at trying to be as open to other non-AVEDA practices as possible. They will guide you, and sometimes expose you to things that you wouldn't otherwise get to see in an AVEDA Institute. That said, I think that the learning leaders really do care about the students at the school. My experience with the learning leaders in the esthetics department was awesome. I feel that they each bring something awesome and personal to the education table. I've learned a lot from each of them. On the other hand, being a student at GMAI and having to deal with the STAFF...sucks. The staff could care less about the students. Guest services needs an attitude check. Admissions needs an attitude check once students start. Career Services is about the only staff position that still genuinely cares about the students. Michelle in Career Services is your lady. Treat her kind. Overall, the school is beautiful, the learning leaders really do care, and the staff could use some help. I would say come in and meet with someone, ask to speak to the head of the department you are looking to go into. Ask if you can look around, maybe even sit in on a class for a little while or something. Then you will have a better idea of what you're getting into.

I decided to try out the services at the GM Aveda Institute since the service was inexpensive and there were good reviews for it. I asked for a partial foil and long layers... and ended up with fried highlights and poofy mushroom layers. It wasn't really what I was looking for, so it's back to a real salon! I do have friends who have success with them, but if you have hair that can be complex to work with (like dark hair & highlights), I'd go there instead for the spa treatments.

Ricardo, at the Gary Manuel Aveda Insitute is definitely one of the best talent at this fine establishment. I have read the other reviews on here and have to say that it is definitely with whom you choose to receive service from in which makes your experience a great one. At first, I totally pictured the institute looking more like a school rather than a full service, high end salon. I love the atmosphere. The staff and students appeared professional to me for each of my 2 visits there thus far. If you ever have the chance to experience Ricardo's manificent expertise, I believe you will be stunned at the end of your appointment. You will feel completely as ease and feel confident that you left your hair in good hands. I am a snob when it comes to just anyone touching my hair but I decided to give Ricardo a try. Why? He exudes class and have to admit, a great salesperson. He convinced me. He took my long, one length super straight hair which ended at the curve of my back and turned it into a three-tiered supermodel volume of loose, wavy curls. My hair has never been able to keep curls. Ricardo taught me what I needed to do and what Aveda products to use. When I went back on my second visit, my three tiered hair became four as I became more confident in his expertise to give me a long side swept, whispy bangs. And I love it even more! Ricardo is extremely precise. He takes the time to listen, make the cut perfect and end with high style with a WOW factor. Since my first time, I have received bountiful amounts of compliments- at work, personal friends, my clients. I have since referred them to Ricardo and only hear nothing but great reviews. I recently attended my personal friend's birthday and she had her hair done by Ricardo. She is extremely estatic about her hair and I am even jealous! I have another appointment with Ricardo in the morning and he is doing my boyfriend's hair for the 3rd time. It's getting harder and harder to book an appt!

I was going to the Institute for awhile for cuts and colors for sometime now, and recently have noticed that they are going significantly DOWNHILL since Elle left. I went in the other day for a chocolate brown all-over color, and left with red roots and purplish hair. These people do not know what they are doing, and don't care. They offered me a free redo, but I said I will NEVER go to them again. I had to spend over $300 to look normal again. NOT WORTH IT Update: Gary, Thanks for responding, but it doesn't make any difference. I had the color done two days before a job interview, and couldn't show up looking like Elvira. So no, I do not want your students to re-do my hair and have to spend $300 more to look normal. I appreciate your trying to make it right, but you wouldn't give me a refund OR reimburse me for having to spend $300 to get rid of the red roots and purplish tint. My original review still stands: your stylists don't care. I was very clear about what I wanted (chocolate brown) and I do not understand how they could let me leave with purplish hair and RED ROOTS.

Went in for a shoulder length straight cut. Sounds simple since my hair was already in the basic style and just needed a trim but 3-1/2 hours later I am wondering.... "what was I thinking"! The haircut was great and the student was very p...

I had been here before for hair services and was always happy with the outcome so I thought it would be fun to take some girlfriends to get our make up done before a party. When we walked in the door there were several people (employees/students) standing around the entry way greeting us which was nice but also a little much. Once we were checked in we didn't wait long, however all 4 of us were booked for the same time and there are only 2 make up chairs. I ended up being seated on a massage chair backwards so they could do my make up which was VERY uncomfortable. My butt is still hurting. When I expressed my discomfort the girls doing my make up didn't really have anything to say. Finally when one of my girlfriends was done with her make up I insisted that I be moved to the empty chair. Unfortunately it was a little late because I was already in pain from such an uncomfortable chair. My make up turned out fairly ok as did one of my girlfriends, but my other two friends were incredibly displeased. One friend's eye make up was completely un-even and she ended up having to start over once she got home. My other friend looked as if she wasn't wearing any make up at all. I feel as though the staff/students weren't as professional as they should have been. It would have been nice if the instructor was overseeing the make up that was being done. I don't think I'll go back. I can get mediocre make up application for free at the mall!

I had simply gone in for a brow waxing and thought it would be nice to also have a facial. I don't want to say who did it, but let me tell you I left with an irritated face and a terrible wax job that was red for over a week! Go to experts that have already graduated and save yourself an embarrassing week at the office with bad skin and burns.

Really you can't beat this Institute. It's a great place to get a color or facial or massage or makeup and Aveda products. I have gone to two really good students that stand out in my mind. Rainy and Roman both did an excellent job with my color. And I have a lot of gray! I will admit I went to one student there that really just needs to go home but I don't think diming her out on the web is a good idea. That's why I didn't give this five stars. It was the last time I went to her for any services and when I almost ended up with her again I refused and asked for someone else. They really give a great service to Seattle. I am going back next week and Rainy is doing my color again. I know it will be excellent and I hope more people give this place their time and money because it is well worth it! Everyone needs a chance to become a professional. Most of the students there already are well on there way! Good Job!

I looked up Gary Manuel Aveda Institute on this site and I saw a review for Emma that described how great she is. I decided to go her and she took the time to talk to me and find out my hair personality. We talked about how I like my hair and she gave some suggestions on what she thinks would look great and match my style. She was completely professional and personable. I finally found a new hairstylist who I love!!

A good friend had recommended this place to me so I drove down from Bellingham to see what it was all about. The moment I walked into the door I was immediately greeted and welcomed. The staff was polite and very professional and I knew I was going to have a great experience! I chose to have a facial done (and yes guys get them too!) and I also chose Nichelle as my esthetician from a previous review I read on Citysearch and let me tell you she was absolutely wonderful and I could not have made a better choice! She was very professional, soft spoken and knew exactly what she was doing! Sometimes I was so relaxed I could not even speak! I highly recommended this place it was well worth the drive and for fifty bucks you can't beat it! Be sure to see Nichelle as you could not be in better hands!

I have curly- unruly hair, and wanted to get a cut and color done. Everytime I get my hair done by a stylist it turns out bad. But I finally found my stylist and her name is Emma. Not only did she ask a lot of questions about what I wanted, she gave me a lot of other options, and I've never had such great results. If you want fabulous hair, go see Emma...!

I have searched Seattle high and low for a good cheap haircut and THIS is the place to go. I have gotten several great cuts there, better than a couple local high end salons that shall remain unnamed. The stylists have all been very friendly, down to earth, and really pay attention to what I want done. The only downside is that they usually take a long time (like 2 hours) to get the job done. So if you go, make sure you have the time.

I don't know what this woman is doing with a pair of shears other than ruining hair. She was supposed to cut jawlength bangs and instead I got a chunk of hair chopped off to only 1" long on the left side of my head. I noticed immediately and her teacher ran over to help but you can't correct something like that. Her response "oh I made a mistake". I'd say! My appointment was at 10:15 am which I was on time for and due to her terrible technique and inefficiency, I didn't leave until after 5 pm. Her teacher had to correct my highlights too after Suki insisted that I'd have to come back because she had to leave on time. What? Since when is that the policy? I used to love going to the institute and meeting the students and having a decent experience for a decent price but this girl was a nightmare. Her teacher apologized repeatedly and said "yes, sometimes they mess up and mess up and then hopefully the figure it out at the end". Sheesh. Now I have to flat-iron a chunk of my hair every day and wear my bangs swept to the side until it grows out. I can't pull it back in a ponytail, nothing. My advice would be to go to the institute, just stay away from Suki!

After waiting WAY TO MANY MONTHS to get my hair done -- part of it being I have a toddler and I'm expecting my second bundle in a 7 weeks... I can never seem to find the time or justify spending a small fortune hair done! After stumbling upon the Aveda Institute on cityseach -- I read all the reviews and I love Aveda products so I was sold to try it out. I was more than pleasantly surprised!!! Essence was in charge of my hair...and WOW, she did a fabo job!!! I'm a natural red head and I just like to turn it up a notch. She worked her magic and provided me a full foil and hair cut. Not only was she great with my hair...she had a great personality and when you are sitting in a chair for 5 hours, 7 1/2 months preggo... you need someone that can keep you entertained and comfortable. I would highly recommend her! While sitting there a couple had just gotten facials together...they were both glowing and the guy was talking about how wonderful it was. So, I decided then that for Father's Day -- that's what me and my love would do! I made us appointments and we went on Saturday. It was like heaven on earth -- for $50 a piece we experienced a 90 minute facial that started with our feet. Nichelle was my Aesthetician in training and was PHENOMENIAL!!! For one, we loved the same style of music so she was easy to chat with! Secondly, she was very sweet when it came to making sure I was comfortably being preggo and all. Surprisingly I was able to lay on my back with a nice pillow under my legs for the whole 90 minutes without any back pain. She has some great, calming hands and made me feel like a million bucks! It was sooo relaxing and SOOO what I needed. My man enjoyed his just as much -- his nice dark skin was glowing when we was finished. We wrapped up by buying the product use on our face and both were glowing and relaxed. A must do again, and again, and again --- you get my point. For $50... you simply can't beat it!

I was recently referred to the school by a friend of mine. His girlfriend is a student over there and so I went to Essence. She was not only very outgoing and sweet, but she put me to ease after I decided to highlight my hair for the first time ever. We cut off over 10 inches and went red!! She is such an amazing colorist and can get you laughing the whole time your there! Essence has quite a skill and I will continue to go to her and also follow her wherever she goes. Her sense of humor is out of the world and knows no stranger. I would recommend her to EVERYONE!!!! I've gotten so many compliments on my new haircut and color. She's great.

I should preface this by saying I came here because of an ad on craigslist of a student needing hair models. She was doing bobs that week. I have a bob and was looking for a shape-up and thought that maybe she would be able to spruce it u...

My first visit to Gary Manuel was to meet with Lindsey for a consultation on my hair for my wedding day. She did an AMAZING job with my updo for my wedding! She did so well that my friends were bringing photos of my updo to show their stylist and copy for their wedding. Also, 4 of my girlfriends went to Lindsey to get their wedding hair done. We all rave about her. I then started to get my haircut from her. She talks me through the steps she takes, which I find very helpful and reassuring so there are no surprises. Lindsey has become my all-time favorite hair stylist!

I have to admit I was nervous and skeptical at 1st because I didn't realize it was a school when I 1st made the appt. however I have nothing but good things to say about them! I've been to soooo many salons and have tried every hair products/colors around and I was happy with the color and with the enthusiasm of not just the students the teachers (who most work at local upscale salons). There is no skimping on what needs to be done whereas I've been to other salons who wouldn't have went the extra mile with just my haircut much less my color(I will be writing reviews on some of those places also I LOVE this review forum!) For example I have ridiculously thick and curly hair the instructor or leader? whatever they call them there Carlos I think his name is suggested flat iron before cutting which is 1 of the ways they (Curly Professionals) recommend as well as cutting when dry a lot of stylist just don't know or care to do it. I have other examples also they really rock I was surprise

I am a former student of the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute and decided to go back last week to get a brow wax/shape and a hair color, and what good way to perk up a Wednesday! I started my early morning out with a brow wax/shaping from Serenity. The spa was empty and quiet in the morning and as always everyone was very friendly and helpful. Serenity did a GREAT job (she won't be there for more than a few months more, so hurry on up!) and Learning leader Amanda is fabulous as ever. I proceded on upstairs into the salon area where I had a color appointment with Lili, who may just be the most adorable person.... ever! (Book with her soon: She's only there until August!) I went from red to dark brown that day and she finished in no time and still did did a beautiful job as she always does. Learning Leader Juan is my faaaaaavorite, and new L.L. Gustav is a sweetie too, both very helpful. My day was great, everyone was very nice and helpful and I had my nice relaxing full salon day in my 9, out by noon, FOR CHEAP- Can't beat that!

If you get a good stylist, this place is amazing. For the past 8 months i went to Alex and he was unbelievable. great haircut and a beautiful blowdry, from a STUDENT!! Now he's gone so I went to another girl... Disaster!!! I know it is a school but come on. beautiful building, fun staff, you just take a gamble with your hair!

I'm very picky about getting my hair done because I have experience with coloring and styling hair. I was nervous about going to a training salon, but thought I'd give it a try since I had heard great things. When I first walked in there were at least 2 girls who offered me water or tea. The music and atmosphere were very modern and tasteful. My stylist, Phoenix (hurry b/c she is only there until May), spent time to make sure she knew exactly what I wanted. Though I was there for quite a long time (my hair is stubborn), when we were through, I walked our feeling fantastic. The products they use are top notch, and the extra care they put into their clients is outstanding. The price is incomparable, especially when considering the overall value.

I've been getting my hair cut at this school for about a year now and have always been pretty pleased with the results. The last 3 times I've been in I've seen Jasmine for my cut, and she is fantastic! I have been to many salons in the Seattle area, at all price ranges, and Jasmine has given me the best cut I've ever gotten. I've referred many friends and co-workers to her, and will continue to see her wherever she goes when she finishes school!

Since they opened early last year, I have used their salon and spa services at least twice a month. The Elemental Nature Facial is a bargain at $35 and the students are generally very competent. I also use them for hair styling and the students are generally good for blowouts. They also allow same-day appointments. PROS: Bargain Prices, Good Service CONS:

This training Salon is great and very very affordable. I have had my hair highlighted there twice and both came out looking great. The only thing to note is that both times it has taken 3 hours to hightlight my hair, so don't go if you are in a hurry.

I started going there as soon as they opened. The first month all services were $5. However, I first got a temporary color put on, and after two hours of work, NOTHING happened! I had to go back the next day for another 3 hours and get ...

I went to see Lindsay at Gary Manuel salon after reading some reviews on this site. I have to say I am impressed! I've had issues with stylists "getting" the fact that I want to hip and young but still keep the length of my hair. Lindsay got it right away and my hair came out perfect. She is awesome!

I'm so tired of paying nearly $50 for a haircut and getting just ok results. Today I decided to throw caution to the wind and try the Aveda Institute. I'm SO glad I did. Amber cut my hair and while I was a little nervous when I met her, ...

I am 45 years old and have received many facials throughout the years. The facial I received from Crystal Booth at Gary Manuel Aveda Institute is absolutely the best I have ever experienced. Certainly, I never imagined this benchmark facial from a beauty school / student. In addition to Crystal's knowledge and professionalism, she provided me a sense of feeling geninuely cared for. This is most unusual, especially from a young stranger. It is an impossibility for me to provide a higher endorsement.

I have been going to the Institute almost since it opened. It's classy and friendly, and best of all you get a really great haircut for the same price as a barber shop. I have gotten more compliments on my hair since going there. My only co...

I was happy with the overall experience but was landed with a horrible stylist who took 3 hours to foil my hair. While other customers were having these wonderful conversations with their stylists, my girl never asked me 1 question and responded to everything I asked her with a yes or no. She kept going to "mix more color" and coming back after 15 minutes reeking of ciggarette smoke. She was supposed to cut my hair as well, but after the three hour foil and silent treatment, I couldn't waite to get out of there. To top it all off, the one thing she did actually say was that I needed to change my shampoo to an Aveda brand (of course) becuase I had a dry scalp and damaged hair.

I've had 2 great experiences at this Aveda institute. The first time I got a haircut; the second time I had highlights done--for only $38. I had no parking problems in the area because both times I've gone in the morning, when the streets a...

interesting, review was removed.i wanted a trim before my anniversary so i decided to go here. i will never go to a beauty school ever again. the salon is clean, modern and stylist was nice but i could tell she wasn't cutting right and she told the instructor she didn't know how to do something after she did it.i felt like a guinea pig,the stylist mentioned it too and the instructor answered, "well,it is a beauty school!" it was the most horrible cut of my life and my layers were extremely uneven, all around the face and it was so obvious, even though another instructor told me it was great. i had to leave my hair in a ponytail for my anniversary and ladies know when we have a bad hair experience we feel terrible.needless to say, maybe i got a bad stylist but this was the last straw with a beauty school.

My 16 year old daughter wanted her hair done for a school dance. The talented young woman who cuts her hair on a quarterly basis wanted to charge her $50. I couldn't see her spending her cash or mine (go ahead, call me cheap but, this wa...

What a fantastic salon! Cleanliness and atmosphere are the first things you notice as you walk into this hip salon. The service is excellent. Everything from the Aveda candles giving out the relaxing aroma therapy to a nice hot cup of tea. I don't know anywhere else that can give you top notch service at such a great price!! Gary Manuel Aveda Institute is a Seattle must do!

The facial experience was outstanding - soft lighting, candles, a choice of aromatherapies, soothing lotions, massage - WOW. It was so much more than a facial! The students are very well trained and make you feel pampered. The price was affordable. An experience I would highly recommend.

As one of Seattle's original Aveda Concept Salons, we were excited when Aveda opened an institute in our area. After hiring two esthiologhy graduates we were impressed and delighted by their skill and knowledge. They also bring with them a true passion for the Aveda mission and product line. We look forward to hiring future graduates of the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute!

Awesome conversations when I got my hair done and then when I got a facial. Felt really good afterward since it was such a deal to get either! Bought an Aveda product on the way out.

These cosmetology courses do not prepare you for passing the state boards. The instructors are rushed and poorly organized, need more qualified instructors to cover the floor. Be very wary before. Lots of hype and little scholastic help. Recommend another school in area with more experience.

I made an appointment at the institute after becoming very dissatisfied with my experiences at Gene Juarez. I was soooo happy with GMAI. People were nice, and treated me like a person/client, not a guinea pig. The staff were professional and courteous, and really listened to me. I will definitely be back. It is more expensive than the Gene Juarez training institute, but is worth it in quality & experience.

As a recent graduate of GMAI, I am honored to be an alumni of an institute that's committed to the business of being ... educational, inspiring and supportive of its students becoming successful in the world of salon & spa. I was immediately impressed by the space itself, the leadership of the instructors, and the mission of Gary Manuel Salon and Aveda to create a real-to-industry life experience for students. One word of caution I would give to any student coming in is be prepared for a challenging year ahead because GMAI is (thankfully) the kind of "beauty school" that goes far beyond prepping you for state board exams. In otherwords, get that dentist appointment out the way, buy as much black clothing you can find on sale, and get away for that long-weekend you've meaning to take now, while you can!

I enrolled 2 weeks ago for the esthetician program (begins in January). I wanted to have my hair colored after seeing many beautiful results while waiting for my tour to begin. My stylist was Ellen. I was really impressed. My friend had Nicole for a color and cut and was also very pleased. I am so excited to attend this school. Many of the students helped each other showing wonderful team work.

I wasnt sure what to expect when I booked an appointment at a training salon but I was more impressed than I would ever imagine! I got my eyes tinted, and a hair cut and color and could not believe how little I paid and how excellent it looked. I had Bambi for hair and Kimberly for my eyes and they were both very sweet and did an absolutely wonderful job. I would never go anywhere else after this experience! I recommend this to everyone who is tired of paying so much for getting their hair colored!

Imagine: AVEDA products, beautiful salon and much cheaper than all other aveda salons. Welcome to Aveda's training salon- but you have to be willing to take a risk with your hair. (hey, it does grow back!) Actually, I haven't heard of an up...

I went last weekend to the Gary Manuel aveda institute to get my hair cut and waxing. I was expecting a small place, but it was huge. The front desk staff were very nice also not what I was expecting. The wait to get an appointment is sort of long, I had to wait two weeks, but it was well worth the wait. The students who worked on me were very professional and knew what they were doing. The young lady who cut my hair was very nice and made me feel very good about myself. They don't pressure you to buy their products, but aveda products are wonderful, I ended up buying shampoo and conditioner for a little cheaper than the website. I had a wonderful experience and hope others find it good as well.

I have wanted to go to Gary Manuel's salon in Belltown for years, but let's admit it- it's pricey (as it should be). So thrilled I was when they opened their Institute on the Hill, just minutes from my work. I took the plunge yesterday and would reccomend the institute to anyone. The stylist was great- not what I expected from a student. The atmosphere is so not beauty school. And the cut was so good that even I was able to make it look good again this morning!

It's about time that going to a cosmetology school became a really positive experience. This place isn't open until December, but they are interviewing students now. I was lucky enough to be one of them!

As a student the toghest challenge is deciding where to go! There are so many great cosmetology institutes out there with the longstanding reputations to back them up. However, of all the places that I have visited (which is extensive) I have never been as impressed as i was with the gary Manuel Aveda Institute. I had the most fantastic experience from the time I set foot in the door and it olny got better! I was absolutely amazed at the enthusiasm and knowlegde of the staff. even before my interview I knew that this was the place for me. Seattle is going to be forever changed by having such a fabulous institute available.

Everyone at the Gary Manuel Aveda Institute went out of their way to make my student interview an exceptional experience. There is a really special feeling here that I haven't felt or seen at the other schools in the area. Look out Seattle, this place is really going to be something special!

This Institute is state of the art in appearence, education, and quality. Highly recommended for training in the beauty industry.

I went to meet with the recruiters about attending the Gary Manuel Aveda institute and my expectations were exceeded by far!! Not only did I enroll but I am even more insired about my decesion than I was before I got there.
